I live in a tiny, off-grid, house on 160 acres of woodlot, wetland, and bee forage pasture with an old apple orchard, in Nova Scotia. I’ve been here five years, and used to live on the opposite side of the continent.

I keep several hives of bees, a bunch of spoiled rotten chickens, guinea fowl, and sometimes pigs. My birds are free-range and live their entire natural lives, not just their most productive years; my pigs are pastured and moved around with electric fence; and my bees are organic. (Everyone eats organic around here, although I am not certified. ) This is not an economic venture; this is an outdoor playroom of discovery and enjoyment.

My two polytunnels do double duty as a garden in the summer and a poultry palace (seasonal chicken housing) in the winter. I refer to the bigger one as a greenhouse although that’s not technically accurate.

My big no-till gardens are sometimes left to their own devices, but usually, I manage to grow a lot of food. I’m really, really into mulch. LOTS of mulch.

“By day” I’m an audiobook narrator to keep feed in the chicken troughs.

I’d love to hear from you.
